Found this recipe at
http://www.geocities.com/area51/stargate/5759/brassclean.htm
In a 1 gallon jug mix:

White Vinegar - ½ gallon
Salt - 1 teaspoon
Laundry Soap - 1 tablespoon
Warm water - ½ gallon

Pour mix into a bucket and then toss in the brass. Stir occasionally until
clean. Pour mix back into jug for re-use. Thoroughly rinse brass and dry
open end down.

Tested this mix on some rifle range “pick-ups”. I nice grab bag of
commercial and surplus rifle and pistol brass (7.62, 30-06, 8mm, 9mm, 45
cal, & carbine). Worked rather well, and it’s cheap.
